In a world of religious and atheistic fundamentalists and in a society paradoxically multi-faith and secular, Mayfield Salisbury celebrates what it means to be human: a rich blend of intuition and reason, knowing and unknowing, affirming and seeking, succeeding and failing, brokenness and wholeness. In our services of public worship we wrestle intellectually with the basic questions of life: why are we here? who and what are we? where do we find meaning in life?
Science, philosophy and mathematics are gifts from God but so too are art, music and spirituality. As a congregation, a community of pilgrims, we support and encourage one another. You are welcome to join us!
MINISTER'S MESSAGE
At its root, faith is an exploration of the inner life. The most important journey which we make in life is the inner journey. The Sacred can be encountered in numerous ways including within the rich traditions of Christianity; along the spiritual paths of other world faiths and in the nourishment given to the soul through the world of nature, its beauty and diversity.
God is the Absolute, the Most Real, our Eternal Lover. The word ‘God’ can be unhelpful because it implies an external, supernatural ‘being’ when, we believe, the Divine is experienced within. The Transcendent is present in and through the material world. Within Christian spirituality, the practice of silence and stillness help us to be present to the Presence. In our weekly diets of public worship, through word, song, and periods of quiet, we seek to open ourselves to the Eternal.
In recent years we have held festivals on meditation and prayer, sacred music, science and religion, and we have celebrated the beauty offered by other world faiths (Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Ba’hai and Buddhism). Alongside an expanding and vibrant youth programme, we are an inclusive community which encourages spiritual growth individually and collectively and enables growing confidence in the Mystery dwelling within us, within all things, in the One we call ‘God’. Welcome!
