Education

Jonathan Copeland was born and went to school in Belfast, Northern Ireland before going to London to study law at University College London.

Work

He practised law in two major commercial law firms in the City of London for 25 years, first at Linklaters, the largest solicitors’ firm in the UK at the time, and then Stephenson Harwood, where he was a Partner. Throughout that time he travelled to Southeast Asia on a yearly basis and developed a passion for Indonesian culture and a strong, not yet fulfilled, desire to understand it.

Books

After retiring from the law he researched and photographed all aspects of Balinese culture. The fruits of that research appear in the best selling book Secrets of Bali, Fresh Light on the Morning of the World by Jonathan Copeland and Ni Wayan Murni, published by Orchid Press in 2010, and in its second print run. It is also an ebook available from its own web site, www.secretsofbali.com.

Jonathan is now a freelance photographer and writer specialising in travel.

He lives mostly in Bali, Thailand and England and travels extensively. He stays in Rye, East Sussex every year and in 2012 published the ebook Walking Tour of Rye, the most beautiful town in England.

Following her exhibitions in 2007 and 2009 at the prestigious shows, Arts of Pacific Asia and Tribal Arts & Textiles, in San Francisco and a lecture on Balinese textiles to the Textile Arts Council at the de Young Museum. Ni Wayan Murni and Jonathan Copeland wrote From Tattoos to Textiles, Murni's Guide to Asian Textiles, All You Need to Know ... And More, which is an ebook. Murni and Jonathan are both members of the Thai Textile Society.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Murni's Warung, Jonathan Copeland, Rob Goodfellow and Peter O’Neill compiled and edited Forty Delicious Years, Murni's Warung, Ubud, Bali, 1974-2014, From Toasted Sandwiches to Balinese Smoked Duck. It was published in 2014 and has its own web site, www.fortydeliciousyears.com. It has an introduction by the best travel writer in Britain – Jan Morris – the Times reporter who accompanied the first successful Everest expedition and broke the story to the world.

Jonathan’s photographs have been published in magazines such as Garuda Indonesia in-flight magazine, Hello Bali, Ubud Live, and Bali and Beyond and newspapers such as the Jakarta Globe, Jakarta Post, Bali Advertiser and The Times, Lombok.

He has contributed photographs for books, such as the ebook Murni’s Very Personal Guide to Ubud by Ni Wayan Murni, Dancing Out of Bali by John Coast, Indonesian Food by Sri Owen, The Ethnomusicologists Cookbook edited by Sean Williams and Bali: The Ultimate Guide to the World's Most Spectacular Tropical Island by Linda Hoffman and Forty Delicious Years, Murni's Warung, Ubud, Bali, 1974-2014, From Toasted Sandwiches to Balinese Smoked Duck.

He took all the photographs for Murni’s Bali Tours, Where to go, What to Do and How to Do It (2016), an ebook of 7 special tours written and designed for guests staying at Murni’s Houses to bring with them on the tours. It is an ebook available on www.murnis.com and all online retailers.
