Monmouth School, founded 1615 for the education of local boys. Renamed Monmouth School for Boys in 2016 and subsumed into a coeducational operation in 2023. Its endowment is administered by the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. This photo archive is connected with the Publication "Monmouth School The First 400 Years" by Stephen Edwards and Keith Moseley. ISBN: 978 1 906507 91 6.
Bear in mind that this photo archive was largely uploaded in 2014 so changing staff, circumstances and students apply. For example, staff listed as current may have since moved on or retired. Continuous updating of such information is beyond the scope of this archive. Most notably, Monmouth School (for boys) ceased to exist as such in 2023 and is now part of a twin site coeducational school, combined with the girls school. Rural independent schools are under a lot of pressure, both financially and politically. As a result, school fees have rocketed and the clientele tend to be more 'fiscally gifted' than otherwise. Many independent schools were founded on a 'Victorian business model', providing boarding with an escape for the city smog, fresh air and 'muscular Christianity' for young men (and women). That no longer applies. Curiously, Monmouth School's greatest impact in recent years has been the large numbers of mathematicians and scientists in its sixth form. So, it was, and probably still is, keeping up with the times.
This photo archive is not fully public because there are child protection aspects to consider. Gradually, more pictures are being released as each is judged safe, usually because the people depicted are now adults and the pictures are, in any case, uncontroversial. The captions, tags, geotags and albums for each image are gradually being improved. Do check back.
