Artist Statement

My art has always been aimed at an honest portrayal of the human condition, not showing only the realistic depiction of the human structure, but the distorted and abstract forms that represent more than just the material body.

My more recent art pieces have developed from an exploration of identity and self to depictions of animalistic human qualities and inner turmoil, focusing on the isolation of a single human being and the resulting emotions of this isolation.

I am largely influenced by the violent portrayal of animalistic human qualities in Francis Bacon’s oil paintings and the unique textures in the photographs of the Starn brothers. Culturally, my work has led me to further research on Shamanism and spirit animals which hold a strong connection between animal and human qualities, using the characteristics of the chosen spirit animals to enhance those similar characteristics found within a human soul. However, my pieces are mainly influenced by my own struggles that materialize in the search of who I am as an artist and an individual.

Overall, my selected pieces are directed towards telling the story of the struggle to finding identity, as well as the struggle to escape the restrictions of society, our surroundings, and ourselves. Because each individual has their own struggle my pieces are often ambiguous and abstract in order to allow viewers to have their own individual interpretations that are affected by their own stories.
