I am exploring the juxtaposition of stereotypically male and female objects, experimenting with print and looking at a variety of different surfaces and backgrounds. This evolved from looking at Helen Gorrill who responded to the representation of women in The Bible, through the recreation of a confession box, a concept I plan to explore. As a feminist, I was grabbed by her work and decided to make a comment on roles in society through casting light on the mundane and 'everyday'.
Having attended a dressmaking course for nine years, my interest in textiles and fashion has grown, linking directly into my artwork. My recent visit to 'PRISM' textile art group's annual show 'Hidden Places Hidden spaces' has also fuelled my experimentation with embroidery and the incorporation of fabric. An interest in pattern has led to looking at unexpected motifs, and inspired by the work of Elisabeth Lecourt, I constructed a dress from maps. I also continue to attend life drawing classes to further my technical recording ability.
Recently, I was selected for a curating project at the British Museum, in which I responded to prints through poetry, drawing ideas from The Great Gatsby. I find that my study of English compliments my interest in Art, feeding the exploration of typography and text within my work. In Art Foundation, I look forward to continue to explore and experiment with a wide range of techniques and materials, informing and feeding my enthusiasm for making and creating.
