Sifting through suitcases, under-bed boxes and countless stacks of paper, I have managed to find some of the more relevant designs and sketches which I have done over the last few years. I am a 17 year old A-Level student living in Sussex and looking to secure a future in Design.
My design inspirations began in the Summer of 2009 when I first visited the Design Museum with my DT teachers for a school trip. Previous to that my knowledge of the 'Design World' had been incredibly minimal, with the exception of making and designing all manor of creations since my early childhood.
Much of my free time since that visit has been spent sketching and conceiving new ideas, I find much pleasure in developing new designs whether it be from my head, real-life situations or just shapes I have come up with.
Until recently my interests in design had been very strongly rooted in creating new interesting products many of which use alternative materials uncommon to those usually used in large-scale modern design. Much of my previous design work could be considered in my eyes as 'the Art of Design' where form is often regarded above a products true function.
Visiting many Universities over the last year and observing a wide spectrum of students work my opinions of design have shifted considerably. Whilst I still take an interest in the 'Art' aspect of Design, I am now more significantly orientated towards functional design where the use of 'alternative' materials and designs in useful applications can be used to achieve a more sustainable and functional world.
Having obtained a greater understanding of what Design is to me, my ethos is therefore very different to the older work which you may see on my page. I hope in the future and once at university to greater explore my possibilities and potential in improving and experimenting with new alternative materials and functions of design, where function is equally as important to form.
