I clicked on the' taken' icon though now that I think about it,when I told my wife that I would like to jump out of a plane for my sixtieth birthday she replied with one simple inquiry-Do you have to wear a parachute? So it is quite possible that sometime in the near future I may click on the icon marked 'open'.
I am an artist living in the Boston area. I have been pursuing my art for over forty years. As inspiration for my art I take in and drink in and breathe in everything possible. I just love to do my work-be it in oils or watercolor or my black and white abstract pen drawings. Years ago I came across Flickr and have become an ardent fan of other people's photography. So much beauty captured in so many moments and in so many different places in the world. It feeds a special place inside me.
I have uploaded some of my own artwork for others to view,my watercolor abstracts as well as some of my seascapes. These are, as they say, 'out of the box' with no digital manipulation either in their creation or their presentation. The watercolor abstracts are free flowing pieces characterized by a balanced imbalance-just like myself those that know me might quip. The seascapes are done out of my head with no specific geographical reference except to say 'north atlantic' or perhaps Maine in some cases.
I have also uploaded some of my line drawings-these are what I have been working on pretty exclusively for the past ten years or so-something in me is compelled to do these. They are vastly detailed and intricate and I get lost in doing them. They are sourced in some deep place within and guided in their creation by intuition and whatever sense of composition I have gleaned over the years. They are both organic and architectural. I love doing them as I do all my work.
And lastly and most recently I have begun to do photographic ice art. Inspired by other Flickr artists I decided to try my hand at this but with my own take on it utilizing my liquid-based watercolors. It is also my first time using some forms of photographic manipulation-contrast,brightness saturation, gamma balance, image inversion of a color channel-love doing this as well. I use Irfan and Harry's filters to do these pieces.
I also have a deep love of electronic music and have found wonderful tracks on Soundcloud that move me and inspire me. My screen name there is 'ambientsphinx' if you ever find yourself trolling for new music. I have begun to learn music production and perhaps someday I'll have something of my own to post but for now I shall remain deeply underground in that regard.
I am lucky enough to have a great wife who on most days does not want to see me dead (speaking of underground) and we have a wonderful dog 'Magnus' who is a great pyrenees and golden retriever mix. One hundred and fourteen pounds of love we rescued from a difficult past. He is my friend.
Please feel free to comment on my work-it is always gratefully received.
As an addendum to this I would like to mention that a young filmmaker I recently met asked me to do an interview-he had a class project for a five minute portrait of someone using a technique they call 'voiceover'. The result can be found on youtube-search Jordan Lisi + Gary Smith and you can view it if you are interested. We talked for forty-five minutes and out of that he culled together his portrait. It was for me a very unique and interesting experience. A little weird being that exposed and vulnerable but it was cathartic.
