Now retired, I am a medieval historian and teacher by profession who originally took up photography so that I could record buildings and use illustrative slides in the classroom. From that I developed an interest in portrait photography and then one evening in 2004, while browsing the net, accidentally came across the oeuvre of the great New York art nude and portrait photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston. I had not spent very long looking at his fine monochrome images, which outclass practically everything else in the genre I have ever seen, before deciding that I wanted to work in the same style. Between 2005 and 2007 I did so, and after an intense and informative learning curve managed to produce work which still gives me pleasure, and which has been featured three times in the art erotica magazine 'Jade', as well as being accepted for sale by the Saatchi Gallery. Some of those pieces are in the albums 'Art Nude' and 'Art Nude reworked' here. The realisation that Johnston had himself been influenced by earlier art led me to other work too, and especially to the Dutch painters of the Golden Age. Little has changed in the art of creating beautiful images since the days of Rembrandt and Vermeer. Hence, although I certainly do tasteful glamour, I am principally an art photographer, whose main concern is always to produce images which are both beautiful and artistically satisfying. Models who work with me tend to find that my images of them do not look like anybody else's images of them.

It is a pity that there are ill-mannered people who favourite large numbers of photographs and give nothing in return, but I do not block them as some do. Cheney Johnston photographed woman as goddess, and because my work is in that tradition I will delete comments which contain obscenities or which I regard as disrespectful, tasteless, or tending to regard the model as simply a sex object, and block the perpetrators if I think it necessary. I may also block people with what I regard as excessively crude user names. So far I have needed to do so only rarely. Further, I will always delete comments which are accompanied by large images advertising particular groups, a practice which seems to be on the increase, because I will not have my pages looking like massive advertisements; some group leaders are ignoring this statement, probably because they haven't read it. Endless pictures of female genitalia and people engaging in sexual acts I consider boring and neither art nor erotica, so I do not take such images. For this reason there are no 'extra' pictures for Friends and Family, and therefore I do not add people as such. Finally, I will not accept invitations to add pictures to groups whose names include words which I consider offensive or in poor taste or irrelevant . These include the word 'slut', concerning which there seem to be transatlantic differences, because in the U.K. it is deeply insulting, while I have had repeated requests to add to groups with titles like 'Beauty of wives and girlfriends' when my models are in fact neither. I may well also reject invitations to add pictures to groups which contain material which is in my opinion pornographic rather than artistic. I'm sorry if some of this seems rather negative, it is only the behaviour of a small minority which makes it necessary. On a more positive note, these photos are here to be enjoyed, and I like to think that some of them contain the sort of art that conceals art. Go on, enjoy yourself...
