I want to do an art foundation because I hope it will set me on the path towards achieving my ambition of getting a creative job.

At school, my work experience was at a prop making company; a diverse and exciting environment. Here I helped to paint frogs for an artwork by Raqib Shaw that appeared at the White Cube gallery. Perhaps because of this, I have often chosen to answer 3D briefs; a wire sculpture based on the contour lines of a tree, an architectural design for a building in Bethnal Green and a public sculpture work. However, I also love drawing and enjoyed this element on the foundation preparatory course that I recently attended. The life drawing massively improved my perception of the human form. Recently, I found the process of distilling a drawing into a linocut design very satisfying and would like to explore more printmaking techniques.

I’m fascinated in exploring colour after obtaining a corrective contact lens for my colour blindness. The lens has given me a new confidence in working with and viewing colour. I am doing my EPQ on how colour-blind people view art differently and have debated the subject with colour expert Don Pavey who gave me his valuable insights.

An exhibition that I especially enjoyed was ‘Paper’ at the Saatchi Gallery. I appreciated the variety of drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography and in particular the tiny trees cut out of paper bags by Yuken Teruya.

My other A levels are philosophy and history. The philosophy topic on ‘the appreciation of art’, was surprising as I discovered the ways different philosophers have developed to value art objectively. Also, learning about world events in history has been rewarding and I would like to see how that knowledge connects with the history of art and design.
