I shoot pictures, not people.

I’m a self-confessed image junkie and entirely self-taught. I love collecting beautiful images — including ugly beauty.

If you have an interesting project around Auckland, no matter how bizarre, get in touch. I’ll more than likely do it, provided it doesn’t involve self-harm involving bloodletting. Fake blood is perfectly fine. If you do have funds to cover the cost of the photography I am interested in it as some people do become successful in their art eventually so please take me on the journey with you. A little more about me

Some of my strongest influences have come from a handful of books: Andy Warhol’s A to B and Back Again, Salvador Dalí’s Unspeakable Confessions, George Orwell’s Animal Farm, and Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. Another major influence was a French photography magazine simply called Photo.

What connected all of them for me was the sense that there were two very different sides to life: one full of colour, imagination and adventure, and another that was oppressive, cold and punitive. I knew very early which side of the fence I wanted to be on — the one with colour.

Photo was particularly strange and fascinating. It could place fashion photography alongside uncensored forensic police photography. Beauty and brutality, glamour and reality, sitting side by side. That contrast stayed with me.

I see beautiful and creative things everywhere I go, and it drives me slightly mad that so few people seem to record them from a photographic perspective at a high level of quality. So, over the years, I’ve tried to do exactly that as best I can.

I’ve never analysed too deeply what kind of photographer I am. Someone once told me that I make everything look like a fashion shoot, no matter what I’m photographing. I took that as a compliment.

Most of my images sit somewhere within the feminine spectrum. I’ve also been described as a purist because I do relatively little Photoshop work. I’m perfectly capable of doing much more, but I’d rather be clicking the camera than clicking the mouse.

Most of all, I want to capture the wonderful world I’m travelling through — Auckland, New Zealand — as I see it.

Some people looking in will judge harshly what they see here. All I can do is feel sorry for you, whoever you are, living inside that narrow, storm-grey world you’ve boxed yourself into. What you see here is only a small aspect of the range of photography that I do.

When you look at these photographs, you might be looking at software engineers, programme managers, lawyers, policewomen, artists, diamond traders, councillors, drunks, ex-prisoners and many others. The people I photograph are full of colour and light. Without them, there would be no images here.

Auckland, New Zealand has an incredible level of talent that can easily match anything happening anywhere in the world. In some cases, I would say Auckland sets the standard. “We’re what’s happening.” That’s the vibe I get from the people I work with. Support the small events around town.
