Montana Komen works to end breast cancer forever in our state by provinding breast cancer education and screening. The annual Montana Komen Race for the Cure is used to educate about breast cancer, raise money for affiliate efforts, and honor survivors and cosurvivors who have battled the disease.
The Susan G. Komen was founded in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker after she promised her dying sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer. Though Susan lost her battle with the disease, her legacy lives on through the work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the global leader of the breast cancer movement. Komen’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
In 1995, with proceeds from its first Race for the Cure, Komen Montana began our mission of providing breast cancer education and screening throughout the state. The Montana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was officially formed in 1999 to carry out the promise of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. An existing group of dedicated breast cancer survivors, breast health advocates and others continued to work tirelessly as volunteers. In 2007 the Affiliate hired its first Executive Director. In 2010 we achieved a landmark goal of having awarded over $1 million dollars in grants throughout the state.
