I have had a keen interest in photography from an early age. My Uncle bought me my first camera for Christmas at age 7. It was an old polaroid Instamatic camera that only took black and white film. This was the first of many cameras. In 2005 I decided to formally study photography and took a part time photography course. The lecturer of this part time course persuaded me to study towards a degree in photography. I enrolled on the degree course in 2006 and graduated with honours in 2009.
During my childhood my parents took me to see some of the castles and stately homes of England and Wales, this created an interest in old buildings and architecture, plus a keen interest in history. When photographing the old buildings that can be seen on this website I always wonder what life was like within them.
I take photos at night because for me it helps add to the magic that digital has taken away from photography. In the days when I used film, I was always wondering "did I get the shot? Will it come out right?" With daytime digital, its point, click, check, "yep I got it". Night photography also means that I can control the light precisely how I want it, not how the sun and time of day dictates. I mainly use torch "flash light" and off camera flash with coloured gells. these are always hand held.
The night images on this website have had no photoshop editing, all the colours and effects are created in camera. They are taken at night using long exposures and either lit by natural moonlight or coloured torches.
