I'm sort of a doll collector although not the "keep them in the box" type. One of my favorite lines are Barbie dolls from the 90's as they were part of my childhood. Alas for a variety of reasons most of the dolls I dreamed about having as a child had to stay as dreams until I reached high school. In a way for me getting these dolls out of the boxes (or buying them without) is a way to relive my childhood since I can see what they were about and if their gimmicks (if they had one) still work (if they ever worked).
Another doll line that I grew to love as a high school student are various Sailor Moon characters. Although Sailor Moon has also been part of my childhood as an anime I only found out about the Manga, dolls, toys etc... as a middle school student and began to collect the DVDs then later the manga and then somehow it went into dolls and toys. Just like with Barbie I prefer them out of the box or without since I can then really experience what the doll/toys was about.
