Following a ten-year business career, I earned both my BFA (San Francisco Art Institute) and MFA (San Jose State University) in photography. Primarily working in black and white, with an emphasis on fine art and documentary photography, my work explores the relationships between history, memory and place. I was a recipient of the Phelan Award in Photography, am included in several private collections as well as that of the Oakland Museum, and am currently an artist-in-residence at Kala Art Institute. An active adjunct instructor, I regularly teach photography at the Academy of Art University and have also taught at the San Francisco Art Institute, San Jose State University and in Castlemont High School’s art enrichment program. I also conduct individual and small group tutorials privately in photography, paper marbling and handmade books. Finally, I am the proud fater of two beautiful boys. Samples of more of my work can be seen at my website, petertonningsen.com.
