D938NDA/2938 West Midlands Travel (WMT) MCW Metrobus Mk2 built between May and October 1986.
Specified with a 4 speed Voith gearbox, Gardner 6LXB 180hp engine, dual purpose seats, luggage racks and carpet runners. A fleet of 50 (D911NDA 2911 to D960NDA 2960) were built to this specification.
The external colour scheme of metallic silver with blue sills and narrow red and blue stripes was very radical at the time. The legend "TIMESAVER" (TS) was added as the name of the dedicated express services the buses would be used on.
Fleet number 2938 was allocated to West Bromwich (WB) garage from new and Fitted with the standard Autofare 3 ticket machine and Pye 2 way radio.
In late 1987 it was selected to be fitted with a Cummins L10 250bhp engine as part of a 2 bus programme (2658 POG658Y was the other, and retained it's 3 speed gearbox) to aide MCW promote the Metrobus to potential customers. Once the L10 was fitted the bus was loaned out to several operators (including Dundee and Luton & District), for them to assess the vehicle in the hope of new orders.
Once returned to WMT at WB, 2938 (which retained the L10) proved to be a big hit amongst drivers and enthusiasts with it's faster acceleration and distinctive sound. However, the engineering team at WB did have a troubled time keeping the non standard bus operational.
When the 979 service changed to the new Lynx in 1990 it was transferred to Walsall (WA) garage, shortly after receiving a repaint into the new TS2 livery (featuring a darker blue band on the lower and upper deck, but retaining the silver in between with a broader red stripe).
2938 was immediately fitted with the new Wayfarer 3 ticket machine and Philips FM1000 two way radio. One of it's first allocations was to attend the local annual transport show at Walsall Arboretum along with fellow WA based brand new Cummins L10 engined and DP seated Leyland Lynx G266EOG 1266.
