I've always had a great interest on photography but only when I got the news of my wife's pregnancy of our 2nd child I knew I had to finally incorporate this old dream of learning the techniques, acquiring an equipment and developing my own style.
The techniques have been gracefully given by Ted Forbes on his "The Art of Photography" podcast series, and following "Masterclass live". I'll always be most thankful for his dedication and excellent teaching. Thank you Ted. If you reading this and haven't seen the podcast, please go to the itunes or theartofphotography.tv to find out more about this excellent work.
The first equipment was a Sony alpha SLR-290, which got me inspired to go out and shoot, and also to invest in more equipment. Also to have the full experience of photography I've acquired a 1964 Pentax Spotmatic that used 35mm film, and had some excellent experience of shooting and developing my own work (again with support of Art of Photography). These cameras unfortunately have been stolen. Due to high costs of technology in Brazil I've only been able to buy a new camera Sony alpha SLT-35, but highly hoping to have enough money to buy some good lens (maybe Carl Zeiss f/1.4 50mm - i can dream right?) and also another old film camera (a Rolleiflex 120mm would be my goal now).
For the style, my photos look just like they've been shot. I have nothing against Photoshop, in fact in the past I've used a lot. But after experiencing the film photography I believe that photo is more about the soul you capture in it, not if it if perfectly aligned and cropped. When I have a good equipment and already deeply learned the basic techniques like light, color zones, golden spots, depth of field, focus, composition, etc, these things come out automatically and I focus on the moment only. This is what you'll in my shots after what I called "the Fenix session" where I took my bike on the beach one morning to take photos with my new camera. Maybe they're not completely straight or something, but what you see is what I saw, and my feeling was captured in that shot.
