As an artist I hold many titles: Graphic Designer, illustrator, painter, photographer, and multimedia artist. In my artwork I combine traditional and digital media. Being Asian-American, my work and style are heavily influenced by traditional and contemporary Asian culture and art.
My artwork always has an idea and/or story to tell. All subject matter comes from Asian culture: national, international, working-class, corporate, popular, youth and counter-culture. My work is influenced by: books, movies, history, myth, fashion and religious beliefs. The tone of my work carries the ideas and feelings of sexuality, science fiction, fantasy, violence, politics and everyday life.
In my narrative I use the contemporary style of storytelling--Manga--entertaining visual. The narrative style of Manga can come from multiple angles and point of view. It can start from a peaceful state and evolve into a totally absurd, weird, strange, chaotic state--then return to normal. Manga is ever-adapting to its environment and burrs the line between mass media and fine art.
People are the focus of traditional and contemporary Asian culture and art. People are also my focus. I want my work to influence people on a daily basis, affect how people see themselves, each other and their relationships to the world. My work is filled with images of people. Many of the characters have exaggerated facial expressions, are visibly excited, shocked, distraught, embarrassed or annoyed--they might swoon, cry, be sweet or bleed.
The overall nature of my art is the clashing of East meets West. I try to show how Eastern culture is now influencing the West and creating a more unified international contemporary culture. All of this can be seen in graphic designs, illustrations, and paintings.
