On my first visit to Stow Maries Aerodrome in Essex back in 2008, it become apparent to me that as the only remaining Royal Flying Corps aerodrome it is a very special heritage site. Within a few short weeks I began to notice an abundance of wildlife and started to take photographs. I’ve been capturing images on the aerodrome ever since.

Every day, and I really do mean every day of the year, I take a photographic tour around the aerodrome, once at sunrise and once at sunset (this can become quite exhausting in the long summer months!). Sometimes I drive around in a 4WD vehicle and sometimes I sit in a hide. Every morning is different and even I am still surprised when something new or unusual shows up. To date we have 23 red-listed birds recorded. In the winter months we can boast all 5 species of British owls.

The wildlife has become accustomed to my daily rounds, enabling me to get very close and capture some of those hard to get images. I have also become more adventurous in my photography and have been trying out a whole range of new ways to get special shots. Most significantly I have been developing my remote photography to get shots at different and new angles and also to get flight shots of birds from low level. I've developed a small remote vehicle for my cameras, but I also use static remotes strategically placed where I am (usually) sure the bird I'm targeting is going to land.

My website www.russellsavory.com/ has a selection of my best shots and also has a news feed from Twitter and other items of interest. I hope you like it.
