Before retiring I used to be a lecturer at London University or a research scientist at a number of different organisations. My father was a good amateur photographer and I have been using many different cameras (some were his hand-me-downs) since my schooldays. My first serious camera was a Pentax Spotmatic, bought while I was working in the USA in the 1960s, and I still prefer Pentax dslr cameras though I have used other makes of digital cameras too.
The photos that I have posted here are a mixture of holiday snaps, landscapes and records of things that interest me. In particular I like unusual windows, old street lamps, and maritime subjects.
I have been photographing old cannon barrels, re-used as mooring bollards or as street furniture in the past. There is an urban myth that many London street bollards used to be French naval cannon captured by Nelson's navy at the battle of Trafalgar. I have examined this belief, and shown it to be a fanciful legend, in an online essay titled: "Old cannon re-used as bollards".
I have joined a few groups on Flickr, but only groups that are directly related to the subject of a particular photograph. I am not interested in getting hundreds of 'views' by linking a photo to dozens of only vaguely relevant groups.
