My interest in transport developed in Plymouth, where I was born on the tail end of the post-war baby boom.
In 1962 I moved, with my parents, to Nottingham and discovered infinite variety in the bus world - and that was just the Barton fleet!! Seriously, though, there was a lot to stimulate my interest in buses.
In 1969, I started working for Midland General and was then allocated to Mansfield Dist/East Midland when the National Bus Company shook things up in 1972.
In 1974, I moved north to work for West Riding & Yorkshire Woollen in various jobs until the end of 1985. As part of the fallout from the 1985 Transport Act, I ended up joining Humberside County Council in early 1986 on a temporary contract. A year later I secured a permanent job as York City Council's Public Transport Officer, staying with them and their successor City of York Council (following creation of a Unitary Authority in 1996) until taking early retirement at the end of 2009.
I therefore survived three major organisational upheavals during my career.
Whilst with York, I played a significant part in developing the Council's Park & Ride services, the Council's network of financially supported bus services, and upgrading the Concessionary Fares Scheme to keep pace with changes in legislative requirements.
