Simon Oud

In his early creations, the artist investigates the role of agricultural structures as beacons within the polder landscape. The closed nature of these buildings, which contrasts sharply with their vast surroundings, serves as a model for his sculptures. In his work, Oud confronts form with space. In later years his investigation shifts more towards the interplay between the polder and its inhabitants, showing traces of human intervention in the landscape. The creation of those sculptures is partly dependent upon the possibilities offered by the materials, which in his case are zinc and brass. During the construction process the sheet metal material gains independence as an object in which contrasting forms and guidance of light are the expressive elements.

Simon is a very special artist, not only is he a talented sculpture, but a talented photographer as well. I have always enjoyed viewing his photos and have drawn much inspiration from them. His minimalistic style is a breath of fresh air from some of the mundane photos on Flickr. He puts a lot of focus on composition and really is able to pull off photos that most people can't seem to get right. I really look forward to seeing what Simon will come up with next, and push the envelope just that much further for all the rest of us to learn from. Cheers!
