Since Flickr insist on me telling you, I'm over 18.
Work it out yourself. I was born on 22/08/1947.
I was born in one of the South Wales Valleys on 22/08/1947 which really makes me pretty ancient, but I feel like a new-born babe:-
no hair, no teeth, can’t walk and I think I’ve just wet my pants !
Retired now, I live in Turkey most of the time, but “hiraeth”, that indefinable longing for the homeland, together with a devotion to both Cricket and Rugby, neither of which is played here, result in periodic returns to Wales.
I was poking about in my parent’s bedroom one day in the way that all kids do when I surprisingly came across a yellow rubber swimming cap of the sort commonly seen in those days on the beach or at the lake. It had a chinstrap, and featured a raised pattern of swirls, but was incredibly smooth inside save for the rows of sharp ridges that obviously provided some sort of seal. The initial surprise was that my mother should have had one at all as I’d never known her to swim or even wear a swimming costume, and the second surprise was that it was in my father’s bedside cupboard. Ah well, mine not to reason why, but it must have been what started my interest in this enigmatic, esoteric subject.
My wife is a great swimmer who regularly swims 50 lengths a day in the Leisure Centre while we’re in Wales during winter, and untold distances in the turquoise seas near our summer home in Turkey. I manage 15 widths a day in Wales and prefer to just float and drift in the summer. Ann used to have quite a few swimming caps when I first met her over forty years ago, but sadly the Polaroid photos I took of her then have faded beyond use. Nowadays, while she is happy to indulge in my major fetishes, rubber and rubberised rainwear, she regards swim caps as quaint museum pieces and will not even wear a lightweight latex cap while churning through the water which begs the question - were they useful, or simply fashionable?
