ACNY’S Mission
Art Connect New York’s mission is to use the transformative power of visual art to improve, expand, and enrich lives. We bring together New York City visual artists and curators with social service organizations to create impactful exhibitions for our city’s many, varied communities. Our process gives exposure to visual artists, presents curators with exciting exhibition opportunities, and aids recipient organizations in fulfilling their intended missions. In doing so, we extend the reach and impact of the visual arts for the benefit of our city.
Our Process
ACNY invites New York City-based artists to permanently donate a piece—or multiple pieces—of work. We call for curators to create themed exhibitions based on the specific needs and functions of social service agencies and nonprofit organizations. The exhibitions created are permanently installed in the offices and facilities of the recipient organizations and agencies.
Art Connects New York’s role is to organize the art placements. We:
Engage curators to create installations.
Recruit artists to donate works of art.
Select social service agencies to receive donations.
Maintain a database of donated artwork.
Coordinate installation of the work.
Teach the agencies to care for the work.
Celebrate the art and the participants.
Art Connects New York is committed to serving as broad a range of agencies as possible. To date, we have placements in a variety of locations, from a rehabilitation center for the physically disabled to a supportive housing facility for the formerly homeless. With each placement, our influence expands and our community of artists and curators grows.
Our Organization
Art Connects New York was inspired by and loosely patterned on The Art Connection, an organization founded in Boston in 1995. After looking at their program and seeing the impact they have had on the communities of Boston, we realized that New York City needed its own Art Connection. We are deeply grateful to The Art Connection for all its encouragement and help establishing Art Connects New York as an entirely independent organization.
