These pictures are stills from a video made in 1981 by some people I met in the mid 1980s. At the time I was at Hatfield Polytechnic, but after I graduated I returned to Portsmouth and came across Southsea Self Help Housing Co_Operative during the mid 1980s.

The video was shot during a car journey, I wasn't in the car! But the video makers were part of a group who were campaigning against the demolition of houses in Carlisle Rd, Froddington Rd, Besant Rd, and other streets in Fratton, Portsmouth.

A number of these houses had been squatted in the late 1970s, leading to the formation of a housing co-operative. It still exists to this day - Southsea Self Help Housing Co-Operative, and I have been helping to compile a history of it.

If you lived in any of the Southsea Self Help Housing Co-Operative houses in Besant Road, Garnier Street, Lucknow Street, Froddington Road, Abingdon Road, Cumberland Road, or Carlisle Road during the late 1970s to early 1980s; we would like to hear from you!

There will be some loss of quality with these pictures due to them being videotape stills, not actual photographs. More information and pictures can be found at www.sshh.org.uk
