Here in 2010, I am an 80-year old California codger. Since I haven't a great deal of time left, it is important to share photos taken in Korea 1953-54. I was stationed first on the prison island of Pongam-do and then at railway headquarters in Seoul. I traveled the length of south Korea five times so some not all of the photos were taken in the two places mentioned.
Prior to the Army, I attended Compton Junior College and then UCLA. I had not finished my BA program when the Army grabbed me. I worked my way through school at a youth center which got me a reclassification as a Special Services NCO on Pongam-do and in Seoul.
I received an early out to return to UCLA in September of 1954 and graduated with a BA in geology in 1955. Due to poor employment opportunities in the US in geology, I went to work for the Southern California Gas Company, first in Engineering then in Gas Supply and then in Regulatory Affairs. After 32 years I retired in 1987. During about half of those years, I continued college classes at USC (geology) and CSULA (geography and urban planning) amassing over 100 graduate units but no advanced degrees..
After the gas company, I subbed in the local high schools for nine years, taught personal history writing and have been assembling many ring-binders of pictures and stories of my life. I guess I have about half of the job completed.
I spent 22 years as the Public Affairs Director for the local unit of the Mormon Church. I also head up bi-monthly lunches for alumni of Compton High School and Compton Junior College, with attendance of 80 to 100 each time. I guess that goes to show there are still a bunch of us old people around.
Enjoy the pictures that I post.
