I met with the mosaic art when I was fourteen years old. Since then mosaics are filling my life with colours, shapes, movements, dreams. A mosaic piece can be rational or abstract, tiny, huge, transparent, opaque, smooth or rough, full of colours or without any. Everything meets there, the inquietude of the idea with the serenity of the making, the apprenticeship and the teaching, the exploration and the experimentation, the artistic evolution along with the personal one. For me the techniques of this art are a gift, the way to connect the sky with the ground, an idea with its implementation.
I make contemporary mosaics. I work with stained glass, tiles, ceramic, tesseras, found objects etc. I like bright colours and the contrast between them. I glue the pieces on wood, metal, plastic, glass or mess with PVA glue, silicone, PVC glue, mortar or Montage glue. I use unsanded grout and acrylic paints, pigments or colored grout for coloring it. I apply the direct or the indirect method depending on whether I am making a piece of jewelry, a lamp or a mural.
My great interest for the intervention of art in the public space and my humanitarian concern led me to organise and realise a public commission/community project in 2017. The mosaic mural “The magic carpet” was made by 60 migrants on the wall of the Municipality Theatre in Mytilene, Lesvos island, Greece. My vision is to realise more public commissions combining them with community projects. I would like to create mosaic pieces and installations in hospitals, orphanages, prisons, community centers etc. I believe art belongs to the public and it should be used as a tool to get people involved with it (especially socially marginalised groups), help them integrate, heal their trauma, discover and enjoy their creative side, leave their personal imprint on the space they belong to and thus make it their own.
The power of mosaics is not just their aesthetic appeal, their endurance through time and weather conditions, their multiple applications. It concerns their dual nature itself. A mosaic piece is the symbol and the subject in the same time. It is always declaring while being. Apart from the message that bears it is itself a message. A message of unity between different elements constituting an entirety.
