I feel obliged to make public images, social justice means something to me, These past few years I have only had the opportunity to take pictures in public spaces. I intend to present social issues in my future work. My work gets less graphic and more intimate I think as time goes by. I hope I can convey the warmth I feel when encountering people.
My photographs are simple yet ambiguous. Relationship with the subject is more important than formal qualities for me in photography. I take what moves me, excites me, stirs me and fascinates me. My work is very varied as a result but lacking focus and theme too.
Sometimes objects and elements of the natural world are very evocative to me and I capture them as metaphors and symbols rather than for their formal, aesthetic value. I do not know sometimes what the scenes symbolize for me, just that they excite or even unnerve me. It is the wildness and virulence of the natural world that fascinates me, frigid suburban landscapes leave me cold.
A photograph should express an idea, and expression trumps aesthetics every time for me. All form is ugly in the end and the ugliest is that which aspires to the perfection of form, that which is most "beautiful"
I don't mistake a photograph for the emotional experience of being involved, it's just an image of life, not life itself. It's a construction. The richness of life cannot be rendered in a flat 2 dimensional image and I take life over art any day! Photography is most definitely NOT my life.
