ARTIST STATEMENT:
As a photographer, it’s my priority to always be on a journey of self-discovery. I have a naiveté and self-awareness about my perspective of how the world is, and that’s where my art separates itself from the industry. I believe in producing a head-turning, controversial, questioning, blunt, uncensored, individual, and raw body of work to my audience. A camera is the most proficient way for documenting my daily life, and that statement will never change. My name is Hiiro Prince, and I’m a multi-media visionary artist.

Bio:
Hiiro Prince’s entrée into the fashion industry began in 2005, where experimented with design and illustration. Fashion predominated his influence with his other mediums, including photography, writing, and styling. In 2007, he produced a small independent line of deconstructed T-Shirts called JPDesigns, which were displayed in three fashion shows that year, and sold to the public. Realizing technical design wasn’t his niche; Hiiro experimented with text-based mixed media, spoken word, and writing.
Hiiro was awarded “Best in Show” by local and internationally acclaimed contemporary artist, Geoffrey Farmer, for overall Visual Arts, at Speaking From Our Art at the Round House Community Centre in May 2009. Since that first initial showcase, he knew that there was deeper purpose to producing and displaying his works.
When not producing art, he is improving his knowledge of the fashion industry, arts community, and local culture, gathering inspiration for future projects. He has been fortunate enough in his youth to travel to major fashion and art centres of the world, including: New York, Paris, London, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Seattle, L.A., and Miami. For the past two summers, Hiiro has attended a summer program at LIM in Manhattan, where he had the opportunity to network with professionals within the industry. Among them were representatives from: Marc Jacobs, Liz Claiborne, Cosmopolitan and SELF magazine, Macy’s and COACH.
Hiiro is also proud to be a dedicated, loyal, and hard-working member of the Cultch’s Youth Panel’s Word and Arts committees, the Vancouver Art Gallery’s Teen Art Group, as well one of the Fashion and Arts photographers, and editor for the Queer Alternative Lifestyle’s Paper “Base Meant.”
In October 2009, Hiiro was a guest on Fashion BS, an ‘off the cuff’ radio show and pod cast hosted by Elaine Mensah and James Cornwell, based out of Washington, DC. The response was highly positive, and just recently in January 2010, he was appointed as Fashion BS’s “West Coast Representative.” His monthly report will showcase the latest trends and upcoming talent within design, art, and fashion.
Hiiro’s aspiration is to pursue his career in fashion photography and styling, eventually establishing his own brand of avant-garde menswear, underwear, accessories, and footwear.
