We are all about helping people experiencing homelessness

We are atheist volunteers Helping the Homeless of Washington DC and surrounding areas (AHHDC). We believe we can make a difference in our community. We believe that people who are homeless are just like you and us, but they are having a hard time for many possible reasons.

 

Our methods are straightforward. Through donations, we collect simple items that people experiencing homelessness need.

 

We distribute light-weight toiletries and small items for people who walk everywhere they go: socks, nail clippers, toothbrushes with small tubes of toothpaste, small flashlights, soap, and socks, etc. In winter we provide gloves and pull-over hats.

 

Imagine you live on the street, maybe you have a tent or maybe not. Maybe you live out of your car or a shelter. You’ve got very little space and you might need to carry many of your belongings with you so they don’t get lost. You need items that you can carry with you throughout your day.

 

The Details

Our clients visit our table if they wish where we provide small items. Socks, small flashlights, bandaids, toilet paper, towelettes, feminine hygiene products, dental floss are all popular.

 

We also offer conversation and a bit of something different for the day. We don’t talk about religion unless a client want to, and we don’t try to turn anyone’s ideas towards atheism.

 

We are atheists motivated by our internal sense of morality. We are citizens. We want to help, to encourage, to guide, to learn, and to receive. We have ethics to guide us. We have moral compasses.

 

But we cannot be just atheists, we are more than that. Our goals, as atheists, are to help our community, to give to those who wish to have our help, to learn, and to respect ourselves by respecting others.

 

We are not a church.
