Exquisite Corpse by charlesmchen.
Exquisite Corpse involves making an drawing collaboratively but unknowingly. I've reversed the idea to combine existing flickr images into collages.
The collages are all made by software which selects images to combine, and then joins them together in a naive, simple way. None of the collages have been manipulated by hand in any way.
My process was to write software that combed through the Flickr archives (using the wonderful Flickr api) and suggest matches in a rather naive way. Often the collages are far from seamless, as the software makes pairings that are a bit of a strethch.
Then, I comb through them and post the ones I like, unaltered. It's kind of a thousand-monkeys-with-a-thousand-typewriters. It ends up being around 1%, though I'm becoming more and more selective. The pairing algorithm is quite simple, though I am thinking of making it more subtle. Most of the matches it find now involve grayscale images; I'll probably just start comparing the images in grayscale.
There are a few qualities I look for in selecting collages: it seems like a single united thing, rather than a marriage. It isn't immediately obvious that it is a collage. And lastly, the two images interact in some way.
