J. O. Baines’ interest in photography began on his 18th birthday when he bought his first camera, a Petri eBn 35mm fixed lens rangefinder in South Korea. He used it for years on black and white followed by Kodachrome slides (ASA 25). Later, J. O. moved up to Nikon SLRs in the early 80’s, Kodak and Sony digitals in early 90’s, and now uses the Nikon D700 and Nikon Df Digital SLRs with a combination of lenses from 50mm thru 500mm and a Nikon Fieldscope EDIII for digiscoping. He has been actively involved in photography since 1960. Having retired in 2007, he still spends a lot of time with camera in hand.

J. O. is a self-taught photographer familiar with many different subjects in all types of environments, lighting and weather conditions. He does most of his shooting at various popular landscapes and points of interest in Bell, Burnet, Coryell, Lampasas, Travis and Bexar counties in the Texas Hill Country. He is partial to rustic, nostalgic scenes, rusty tractors, farm equipment, trucks and old ranch houses. He is especially fond of windmills and only passes them up when there is no place to park safely. In addition to flowers, plants, insects and other nature scenes, he also enjoys shooting portraits, sporting events and other special occasions. Since his retirement in 2007 he has been hooked on bird photography at a local Bald eagles’ nest and along the Texas Gulf Coast, a spectacular portion of the Central Flyway, of which Texas contains a number of birding hot spots.
