Photography – for me it means painting with light. Keywords here: “painting” and “light”.
A picture is always more than just a reproduction of reality. In fact I dare say no human being ever fathomed what reality actually is. Thus “painting” is in my eyes a decent metaphor, as it also implies that your own thoughts and views of how our world was, currently is or yet may be were woven into the making of a photo. It certainly isn’t a passive but an active, highly creative obsession. If possessed every now and then, I’m particularly taking pains over “painting” my shots in a detail-rich way, as commitment to excellence is all about attention to detail.
And then there was the thing with “light”: Beside the mere physical need of it for taking a photograph, I also like to perceive it in a more abstract manner – bringing some light into our sometimes dull and gloomy everyday life. So as a hobby-photographer I’m spurred to show seemingly ordinary, mundane you even might call them dull objects and moments from a different angel or in another light – turning them into something interesting and appealing.
It’s all a matter of being aware of your surroundings and realizing that there are some really amazing and utterly interesting things to look at – things that unfold their magic, clearly visible for everyone, if perceived through the mesmerising artistic eye of a photographer.
And then you start asking yourself: can this be real? It’s up to you!
