In 2007 I got into photo manipulations after teaching myself photoshop from reading online tutorials, and in particular Abduzeedo's website (www.abduzeedo.com).
Around that same time my son was born which was also a source of inspiration for photography. In early 2009 I bought my first digital SLR, a Nikon D-90 with standard lens kit, which is the same camera I am using to date. Before that I only had a compact camera Pentax Optio. It took me about a year to fully learn all the functions on the D-90.
In July 2009 I joined Flickr and started following a number of Brisbane photographers, mostly landscape and urban, and became inspired by their styles, compositions and techniques. Flickr has without any doubt helped me grow as a photographer and when I look back through my photostream I can see how my style and technique has evolved.
I eventually bought a Sigma 10-20 mm wide angle lens, which rarely leaves my camera now, and also a Sigma 150-500 mm lens ("Bigmos") as I like taking close ups of the moon, sports photography and bird and wildlife photography.
My most viewed photos have been my "Day and Night" series where I attempt to blend shots taken in both the day and the night from exactly the same location. Out of these "The Pulse of the Light Flow" has been the most popular.
Another top viewed photo is one I took of Ana Ivanovic at the Brisbane International - no surprises there. I managed to sneak the Bigmos into that tournament and got front row seats during change of ends.
A few of my landscapes have also been Explored.
As I have a young family, I have to manage my time between work, family, and any spare opportunities I have left over for taking photos.
Going forward I want to expand my Day and Night series as I believe it is an innovative concept, in particular the different styles that can be used to blend day and night.
I will also be taking plenty more landscape shots, and will be ordering some Lee filters to further explore long exposure and fine art photography.
