The initial unit of the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion was constituted on 24 June 1921 in the U.S. Army's Organized Reserves. As a Headquarters and Headquarters Company, the unit was a part of the 195th Infantry Brigade in the 98th Division. In November that year, what is now known as the 3rd Brigade Combat Team was put together in Albany, New York. When the 195th Infantry Brigade was redesignated as the 195th Brigade on 23 March 1925, the team retained their identity.

On 20 February 1942, the unit again changed, this time becoming the 98th Reconnaissance Troop. A few short months later, the 98th Reconnaissance Troop was ordered into Active Duty status and moved to Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky. 15 September 1942 marked the conception of the 98th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, an element of the 98th Infantry Division. After nearly a year of routine operations, the unit was then reorganized as the 98th Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized). From 16 February 1946 to 26 February 1947, the unit was inactivated in Japan. Before reactivation, the unit was redesignated as the 98th Mechanized Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop. On 12 March 1947, they were reactivated at Utica, New York. Shortly after reactivation, the unit moved to Syracuse, New York and finally settled in Rochester, New York on 13 August 1948. A company-sized element, the unit was reorganized and redesignated on 21 February 1949 as the 98th Reconnaissance Company. The entire company was disbanded on 1 May 1959 and became a permanent Active Duty company under the title of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 195th Infantry Brigade.

The new dynamics of the unit were again reorganized, and they became a part of the 25th Infantry Division as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade on 21 June 1963. The element was activated on 12 August 1963 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. From 24 July 1972 to 15 November 1985, the unit was inactivated at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 25th Infantry Division was activated on 16 November 2005 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. It is comprised of Alpha Company from the 65th Engineer Battalion, Bravo Company from the 125th Military Intelligence Battalion, and Charlie Company from the 125th Signal Battalion, as well as a Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, and Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade. The Battalion's activation was part of the modular transition among Army Divisions.

The 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion has 65 different Military Occupational Specialties and 12 different platoons, making it the most diverse and truly unique Battalion within the 25th Infantry Division. Within a year of its activation, the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion deployed in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM to Kirkuk, Iraq in August 2006. The Battalion extended while in theater to support the U.S. troop surge that proved pivotal in the success against the insurgency and providing a true opportunity for regional security. The Battalion led Brigade Counter IED efforts, while providing unmatched support to Intelligence, Communications, and Detainee Operations. One short year later, the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion again deployed to the Kirkuk and Salah ad Din Provinces, Iraq in October 2008. Over the course of the year, the Soldiers of this battalion conducted and enabled counterinsurgency and stability operation as TASK FORCE BAYONET throughout the Bronco Brigade Combat Team's operational area in Salah ad Din Province. These operations helped Iraqis set the foundation for a secure and tolerant society with lasting strategic ties with our Nation. Through the sacrifice and honorable service of the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion's Soldiers, the people of Tuz Qata and Salah ad Din Province experienced significant progress.

The Bayonet Battalion's deployment to Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM began in April 2011. Taking on wide array of mission sets, the battalion partnered with the Afghan Security Forces and government leaders in the Jalalabad municipality. Due to this strong and effective partnership, Jalalabad, the largest district in Nangarhar, was transitioned to Afghan security primacy in January 2012. The battalion then partnered with the Afghan Border Police, covering outposts along three provinces, successfully increasing the border police's proficiency, capability, and capacity. Taking on a wide array of additional mission sets, the battalion supported maneuver with critical intelligence and communications support across four provinces in AO Bronco, to include human and signals intelligence and retrans communications support to brigade level operations. In addition, the unit provided two route clearance packages and dismounted Sapper support to ensure freedom of movement, security, reduce obstacles, and support maneuver operations. The Bayonet Battalion successfully redeployed to Schofield Barracks in April 2012, and is beginning to prepare to the nation's call and write the 25th Infantry Division's next "Tale of Glory."
