Outside work I try to keep the creative juices flowing by involving myself in frippery I know I'll never finish. Namely abandoned, half-painted canvasses, several badly drafted attempts at a cook book, wonky pottery, shameful contributions to a number of unfinished, un-pc musicals, growing my own veg and an ongoing love / hate relationship with writing... One thousand and elevently seven projects on the go at any one time. Flakey?? moi??
With photography, I'm very much a beginner, taking myself waaay out of my comfort zone to learn something different. I try to capture a new image every day which can mean even my monotonous commute has the potential to throw up something special or unexpected. I have a Nikon D70 for days out, but most of my day to day shots are taken with a weeee point and shoot / zumi / lomo. My style is more documentary as opposed to skill (which I am sure is evident from the photos on my stream), but I enjoy it and I'm slowly learning through trial and error.
Recently I've given working with film a go (in the process of converting the cupboard under the stairs into a dark room) but I'm finding it really difficult because I have no idea what I'm doing, so may very well end up abandoning the idea..! ...yep - idea abandoned after a number of disasters
I've also started to make mini movies with my wee Harinezumi, but the results so far have been appalling because I've not yet learned how to edit properly. As soon as my offerings improve I'll pop them up.
I gain confidence each time I pick up my camera, but continue to be wary of capturing images of people, which I think can sometimes make my pictures look sad and empty... My fear of snapping people could be because I can't stand having my own picture taken.. I keep toying with the idea of a 365 project seen as there are only 6 pictures that exist of me in my twenties... I might kickstart it on my next bday
In terms of photography icons, I'm drawn to the simplicity of Eggleston, the fantasy of Tim Walker and the gritty realism of Martin Parr.
Most evenings you'll find me ligging my way around old London town attending the opening of envelopes, swigging gin with red wine chasers and losing my shoes / specs.
