Tongass National Forest
Drag to set position!
The Tongass National Forest is the largest of the 155 national forests, covering 17 million acres that span 500 miles from north to south in Southeast Alaska. It is administered from 10 ranger districts: Yakutat; Hoonah; Admiralty National Monument; Juneau; Sitka; Petersburg; Wrangell; Thorne Bay; Craig; and Ketchikan-Misty Fiords.
As the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world, the Tongass garners substantial attention. Each year Southeast Alaska hosts millions of visitors who travel to some of the 32 forest communities, where residents live directly tied to the local natural resources. Every decision that the Forest Service makes here directly touches the lives of tens of thousands of residents and millions of visitors.
