As humans, we see birds as symbols of freedom. We admire their mastery of the skies with some species spending most of their life on the wing. We are in awe of the ability of birds to migrate tens of thousands of miles across the vast landmasses and oceans of the world – many Arctic species routinely over-winter in Trinidad and Tobago. We are intrigued by their diversity, which allows them to occupy every environmental niche on the earth; by their creative adaptations to the many microenvironments they inhabit, whether seasonally or permanently. We are attracted to birds for the intensity and delicate blending of colors that they display, although, sometimes only briefly. Birds have always amazed humans with their elaborate choreographic displays and other forms of behaviour, especially during courtship.
Trinidad and Tobago is an excellent global window from which to gaze upon these beautiful and engaging symbols of freedom.
During the last three years I have been capturing the expressive beauty of the birds of Trinidad and Tobago, which I have brought together in a collection of Chi Moment photographs. These photographs freeze the artistic “wow moments” of my encounters with our sometimes very elusive feathered companions.
To me, birds are objects of art and photography is the means through which the canvas is painted.
