I am an environmental engineer who loves the open road. Over the course of my life, I have driven my car on the equivalent of Jules Verne's trip "around the world" each year - albeit more slowly than it takes an astronaut to circumnavigate the earth today. Although I have never been into outer space, I obtained my small plane pilot's license after college and first learned to appreciate the solitude of gliding above Hawaii. And while I love the sea and have manned the jib in ocean sailboat races in the Caribbean, hiking has always been my favorite activity - be it in a forest, above the timberline or through the concrete jungles of a city. (Deserts and beaches are OK too.)
Over the course of my life, I have come to conclude that people all around the globe are inherently helpful, kind, and willing to help someone who is lost or in need of assistance. As long as these values continue to be passed along to succeeding generations, I have hope for mankind.
