Thanks for visiting my profile.
I took up photography seriously five years ago. I am much more interested in trying to create something artistic than I am in just snapping shots. I enjoy still life, travel photography, and landscape photography, although I only post still life on Flickr.
I took up still life photography as a way of learning about composition and use of light. There is always a chance to make still life photos after work and on weekends, a nice fit into my otherwise fairly busy life. In order to improve my knowledge of still life, I have built a small library of 16th/17th century Dutch and Spanish art books. I found that if I diligently try to recreate the look of the old paintings, I learn by trial and error how to place strobes, set the table, and make the backgrounds.
I have also learned a lot about still life by studying the photographs on the various still life groups in Flickr. There are many incredible photographers in these groups.
I have exchanged notes and comments on Flickr with people all over the world. I never imagined that I would have friends from so many countries. That has been the nicest surprise from posting photographs. Photographers are a very friendly group of people.
I have entered a few competitions with some success, and have had a several photos selected for juried museum exhibitions. This has been highly encouraging, and something that I would not have done without a encouragement from the people on Flickr.
Take care,
Jimmy
