I was born in November 1943 in Chadderton, Lancashire. My early education was provided by Drury Lane Infant School and Eustace Street Primary school, both in Chadderton. To everyone's surprise, mine included, I passed the 11+ examination and attended Chadderton Grammar School.
1963 I began a three year course of teacher training at Loughborough College.
I left Loughborough in 1966 and started a teaching job on Hattersley, then in Cheshire. January 1969 obtained a post in Doncaster. In August of that year Anne and I married and In September 1970 we moved back to Lancashire and I began teaching at Farnworth Grammar School which later amalgamated with Little Lever school, where I continued teaching until I retired in 2000..
I have for many years been active in the Club Photography and have been privileged at various times to be President of both the Bury Photographic Society and the North Wales Photographic Association. I also acted as judge for Club and Inter Club Competitions around North Wales. Over the years I have entered my images, print, slide and digital, with some success, into national and international salons and exhibitions. In doing so I have gained a number of distinctions, I hold the Excellence Award of the International Federation of Photographic Art and the Distinction Award for Photographic Merit of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB). The awards of which I am most proud are that of the Award for Meritorious Service (APAGB) given by the PAGB and the Hon NWPA for services to photography in North Wales

Hi David. You're no doubt aware that I have faved a great many of your wonderful images, and I just wanted to say a really heartfelt thanks for sharing them with others. I work on the "Iron Road" myself for my sins, and so many of these images take me right back to the beginning (Carnforth being my first depot in 1981), & it really is thanks to folks like yourself that I can revel in what was once the ordinary, and almost - but not quite - always taken for granted, and then it was all gone. Am I right in thinking that you once had a book published by OPC back in the day? You really ought to seriously consider another one, you know - Strathwood perhaps, as these fantastic snapshots of the everyday railway really do deserve a much wider audience. Anyway, just wanted to say "thanks". Andy.
