I have been a rhino fan ever since I was a kid. As one who is going into teaching, I carry my fondness for rhinos into my philosophy of working with kids. In one of my current positions newsletters, I wrote the following regarding the rhino and the underdog child......

Every Rhino is Special

I often get asked why I collect rhino paraphernalia. People will tell me they are nothing more than big, dumb, clumsy beasts, which cannot see past their noses. I disagree!! The rhino has many features and attributes that make it unique and special. Rhinos are the only animal to have a horn directly on their face. Even though their eyesight is bad, they have an excellent sense of hearing and smell. Most weigh over two tons, yet they can run at spurts of 30 miles an hour. Rhinos have gotten a bad rap, because people have focused more on their negative features then their positive qualities. As rhinos are deserving of more appreciation of their attributes so are each an every child whose life we may influence as well. Start seeing the qualities in these “little rhinos” that often get overlooked and forgotten by too much focus on the negative, and too little on the positive.
