Anne Atkinson began her career in the arts in 1985 as a technical theater major at Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition to painting scenery, she designed sets, lighting, and make-up. She painted professionally for three years in Richmond at Theater Virginia, Theater IV, The Richmond Ballet, Dogwood Dell, as well as in independent venues. Anne also painted scenery for several films.

She moved to Washington, D.C. in 1991. There, Anne started a free-lance decorative art business. For ten years, she worked with top interior designers developing and executing mural and faux finishing commissions. Her public works in the Washington Metro area include three large murals at the Watergate Hotel, two lobbies in Alexandria’s Luxury Carlyle Towers Condominium Complex, a room in the 1996 National Symphony Orchestra Decorators’ Showhouse, and faux finishing in the Dolly Madison Courthouse.

Anne moved back to the Richmond area in 2000. She and her best friend founded a preschool art education program. She also worked as a museum educator for almost three years at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Teaching with a wonderful, enthusiastic team of educators, Anne enriched children’s art awareness through museum tours, camps, and activities.

Following teaching with the VMFA, Anne was the Gallery Projects Specialist at the VCUarts Anderson Gallery. She worked closely with local, regional, and nationally celebrated artists promoting exhibitions through public relations, advertising, and special events.

During the past eight years back in town, Anne has painted two Romp ‘n Rolls, the Goddard School in Short Pump, and many residential commissions.
