I love taking photographs of nature and old buildings because there is always a story behind them. One can see that I use the elements and principles well in my work because of the interesting angles and the lines that move your eyes throughout the photograph. One master photographer that I really admire is Sally Mann. I love her work and in a way am inspired by her photos. Her older work was mainly of people, but I liked how she used nature as her background. Her most recent work is of landscapes which I really love because she captures the beauty of nature. I like the way she uses different types of shooting and printing techniques, like using a damaged lens so that the photo has a “ghost-like” effect. In terms of developing as an artist I just really need to focus on my strengths and strengthening my weaknesses. I can try different shooting or printing techniques to enhance my photos, such as solarisation or cyanotype, and throughout the year I will learn more techniques I can use in the future. Two photos of mine that are thematically related are from the juxtaposition assignment. The 1st photo is titled “Walker” and it is of two people’s feet, one of an old man, and one of a young woman. The 2nd photo is titled “College”, and it is of two teenagers, one sitting on the computer, one watching TV. These two photos describe the difference in the generations; the old man who needs a walker but tries his best to walk, and two fully able-bodied teens that can walk but choose not to. Being in photo 2, I have grown as a photographer and really figured out more about my strengths and weaknesses, I have enjoyed my time in this class, and I look forward to shooting more and expanding my work.
