Matt Licari was born in Manhattan, grew up in the Bronx, and spent several summers in Maine. He has traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally, and shows the pictures makes abroad alongside pictures from his native East Coast environment. His work explores urban, suburban, and rural subjects with an approach similar to that of a street photographer. Although he uses a large-format view camera, he prefers working quickly and intuitively, making groupings of his images post-shoot.

Matt studied photography at the School of Art + Design at SUNY Purchase in New York. He has interned at the Guggenheim Museum’s photography archives, worked as an assistant to numerous commercial photographers and artists, and taught photography to kids in an after school program. Matt studies jazz piano, is a member of the rock band Genetic Control, and spends his free time reading, skateboarding, hiking, and cooking. He currently interns at the Richard Avedon Foundation in Manhattan and works as a freelance photographer and artist.
