Since I was a child, I have loved the ability of photography to help me notice the beauty of the world around me. Initially, that meant using up rolls of film in my point-and-shoot camera on the flowers near my family’s house. Even today, my greatest joy in photography lies in the awareness it gives me and the way it helps me connect to nature.
Although nature photography will remain especially meaningful to me for its meditative qualities, I enjoy virtually all types of photography, from studio still life to portraits. As my experience with graphic design has grown, I’ve found great satisfaction in taking pictures and incorporating them into the professional design projects that I undertake. For example, I am currently designing a series of e-books written by Robert Yehling called Writes of Life that use my photography as the opening pages for each of the twelve chapters. On this particular project, I am also designing visuals, charts and diagrams for each chapter.
Graphic design first began to hold my interest when I was in grade school learning to use old school design programs such as Quark and PageMaker. My passion and abilities in design have grown since then, and I studied both graphic design and photography at Lewis & Clark College and Ananda College of Living Wisdom. One of the exciting things about graphic design lies in the field’s continual evolution and refinement—there are always new tools and techniques to utilize and explore.
I love any form of graphic design, whether it be book design, logo design or a simple poster. I have designed websites including northernlightsgemstones.com for the handcrafted jewelry business Northern Lights, and have delved into the new realm of electronic media packages with a project for Ananda College of Living Wisdom. I just finished designing Hearing from Friends, a chapbook given to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gary Snyder as a gift from the students and faculty of Ananda College. Whatever the project may be, I do my best to create designs that are meaningful and inspiring.
