SAW’s ethos is to produce unique, handcrafted artwork; flexibility and adaptability are essential to the design and production process. Imagery evolves from initial consultations with clients and an artistic response to the board itself. The board’s material not only dictates what equipment can be used but also suitable designs.
Once sketchbook work is complete it is projected onto the cleaned board. How the image is transferred is specific to the design, new imagery often needing new methodology.
Artwork can be applied on top of cured resin using paint pens and sealed with clear acrylic spray lacquer. Designs drawn directly onto foam can also be rendered in acrylic paint pens or spray paint. Using pyrography to burn designs into surfaces offers further possibilities for wooden boards.
Responding to individual requirements SAW is able to offer techniques and finishes that would be impossible to achieve in larger batches. Each board becomes a work of art.
The irrepressible driving force behind the imagery, Patrick Boothman brings his talents from a traditional fine art education and technical capability from postgraduate qualifications and subject knowledge from various courses.
Leaving behind careers in the busy land locked cities of South Yorkshire Patrick and his wife Celia both relocated to the calm of Pembrokeshire. Here Patrick’s passion for surfing and artwork finds solid form. Focus and determination means technique and ability are constantly assessed and improved, resulting in an authentic hand crafted designs for surfers by surfers.
