Why an Australian Shepherd?

My family already had a dog, but he was aging and never interested in playing with toys or balls and I always wanted to have a dog that loved to play fetch and frisbee. Then, my boyfriend Nate got a puppy around Christmas time (07). This little Vizla was a dog I've never met in person before. He was so loving and LOVED to play! I had to have a puppy too (although I've asked for one almost every Christmas and birthday)!

At first, I had planned on getting a Yorkie I would name Elle, because I was thinking my parent would only get me a dog that was small because Chucky is so little. BUT I still wanted that playful dog! I really have a thing for bigger, smart dogs.

So one day, I started looking at puppy breeders and saw an Aussie pic and remembered how great they seemed, and they had such beautiful coats!

I had planned then to get a female blue merle, but I saw Sock's photo from a breeder in Texas and fell in love!

In your photos, which dogs are yours?

I have one dog who belongs solely to me; Socrates (aka. Socks) who is a Red Tri Australian Shepherd (born Oct-20-08)

In my home, there is also my parents dog Chucky who is a Bichon Frise (born Feb-14-97)

All other dogs are friends or strangers (or my exboyfriend's- Nate- dog, Duke the Vizsla born Dec-15-07)

An Australian Shepherd and a Bichon Frise; do they get along?

For the most part they do get along, although Socks is constantly herding Chucky, especially if Chucky runs or speeds up to get away! However, the problem is easily avoided being Chucky always wants to be with my parents and sleep by their feet so he is in the upper part of the house while Socks is usually downstairs destroying everything! I didn't have much hope in getting a dog of my own because I've asked for dogs in the past and my parents don't like two things: more then one dog, and larger breeds. HOWEVER to my surprise, my Christmas present this year was a beautiful Aussie boy who has brought so much fun and love into our family!

Chucky was a surprise to me and my brother while we were young after having to give away our yellow Lab (Abby, only a year old) because she had been abused and wasn't safe around us young kids-as we often got hurt. We really wanted a dog and finally had a house were we could have one so the next week we got Chuck! We enjoyed growing up with him and is still the best dog, even in his senior years!
