Hi, my name is John. I was born in the mid 50's, a baby boomer and still live in Brisbane, Australia. I retired some years ago. Before you read this little intro, I must tell you that my photos are “like a box of chocolates”. Forrest Gump knew what he was talking about and I hope you get my drift! Nothing too arty, just an observer of life. You may tell from my photo that I rather like trains, my lifelong hobby that goes hand in hand with photography, history and geography rather well.
Thank you for looking at my photos, if they weren’t on Flickr, even I wouldn’t get to enjoy them as much. I love to learn and get inspiration from Flickr and my Flickr friends and I truly love looking at your wonderful work. And thank you for viewing, faving or commenting, I appreciate it all. I do dedicate my photos to my wife who often inspires me to see things another way and who is always there by my side. Life is too short to do it alone and I love her for it.
I do not analyse other people's work in any technical detail. I don't pretend nor wish to be a photo critic. Good photographers usually self analyse, or should and know the strengths and weaknesses of their own work and learn by that. These days, sadly, I also turn exif off. I got sick of those few nit pickers (railway guys like me call them rivet counters) who wish to tell me that I should have stood somewhere else, cropped like this, used this f stop or that shutter speed. I love to learn and improve but I do not like busybodies who want to puff themselves up.
For most of my photographic life, I was a no post process (editing) sort of guy. These days I do mostly just light editing to clean shots up. Occasionally I break out for fun but I do not use complex or costly editing.
Like all photographers I retain absolute copyright. Please do not use or repost/republish my photos in any way ( no matter what quasi legal excuse you use) without asking my permission. Most times I am happy to give my permission. I am not a fave, Explore or views counter, have no idea and don't care about my stats. I do this because I love it and I do love the wonderful people I meet along the Flickr way!
My latest camera is the wonderful Nikon Mirrorless Z8 which I mostly pair with a Z mount 24-120mm f4. I also have an adaptor for my old F lenses. I still have four great F bodies, D750, 2 x D810 and a great end of the line D850 with a range of full frame lenses from fish-eye to 600mm. It means I don't have to keep changing lenses which I kind of like. My wife also uses the D750 which was and is always a great camera.

My friend John (westernthunderer) is a photographer of the Australian dream. You can't help looking at his photographs (especially the ones of old places) and not feel that he has a unique understanding of what made the "old Australia" tick. John and his wife Jenny have travelled more miles (kilometres just doesn't sound right in this context) right around this big country, that he rivals the Leyland Brothers. If you're an Aussie and don't know that Mike and Mal Leyland were the pioneers of travel TV in this country, then you don't understand the "old Australia". I really think John was in Geoff Mack's mind when he wrote the classic Aussie song, "I've Been Everywhere Man." Well that's an exaggeration because the song was written a couple of years after he was born. Anyway, to cut to the chase, John is undoubtedly a man who has a deep affection for and sensitivity to what made Australia what it was. Look at these pictures and take in the serenity.
