Writing has long been my primary medium of self-expression, but it can take days, weeks, months, or even years to write and revise something until I'm satisfied with it. Thus, I like the instant gratification of digital photography. When I push that little black button, I can immediately see if I've captured an image I'm pleased with. If not, I'll take five more of nearly the same shot with a variety of settings until I'm happy with the results or give up in frustration.
Taking a photograph manifests the ephemeral quality that characterizes existence and is an attempt to capture the beauty, the interest, the perspective that I perceive and wish to preserve to retain a memory but additionally create something aesthetic from my world while time and space unfold before me. As a tool of perspective, the camera forces my eye to seek out something worthy of subject matter, and I enjoy turning my camera's lens this way and that while trying to dissect my environment. Most of the time I do not succeed at capturing my vision, but it is still a worthwhile quest and adds definite value to my travels, both great and small.
