Mad Hope, green witchery of humankind
there are treasures in your tangled daydream,
dream treasures which are never what they seem;
vain madness, golden rapture of the mind,
soul of the world, old age free of sorrow,
imaginary greenness of the gray,
joy the lucky always expect today,
and the unlucky always tomorrow:
some follow your lure of shadowy gain,
and see all things colored to their demands;
let them wear their spectacles tinted green,
but by me, whose lot it is to be sane,
and hold my eyes before me in my hands,
what can be touched, and nothing more, is seen.
Sonnet 152, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz,
translated by your humble servant, Enriqueta Carrington
